DIY spiegelkastje

Het was even slikken om een DIY video te maken waarin ik vertel wat ik doe, maar ik ben blij dat ik het heb gedaan. Tachtig procent van mijn volgers komt uit het buitenland dus lag een video in het Engels voor de hand. De uitleg in deze blogpost zal ik daarom in het Engels en Nederlands doen.

Wat gaan we maken? Ik zocht een nachtkastje voor de slaapkamer op zolder maar wat ik wilde was veel te duur. Zo kwam ik op het idee om zelf een ontwerp te bedenken en uit te voeren. De basis/binnenkant is van hout en de buitenkant van spiegels. Ik ben uitgegaan van een nachtkastje van 40 cm breed x 40 cm diep x 50 cm hoog. Wil je een andere maat? Dit hebben we nodig:

2 houten planken van 39.4 x 50 cm
1 houten plank van 36 x 50 cm
3 planken van 36 x 38 cm
4 spiegels in de juiste maat (wij gebruikten 40 x 50 cm, of bestel deze eenvoudig op maat, online of bij de plaatselijke glashandel. Zelf snijden kan ook, dat hebben wij gedaan)
4 zwenkwieltjes
Spiegellijm
Goed gereedschap om het hout mee te zagen (of laat dit door de bouwmarkt doen, wel zo makkelijk)

To make it easy for all of my followers I will do this blogpost in English. As my English is limited, please feel free to contact me if something is not clear. Our goal is making a cabinet/bedside table. I designed a practical and good looking cabinet. The base/inner side is from wood and on the outside we use mirrors. The size we use is 40 cm x 40 cm x 50 cm high. If you want another size you can use the calculation schedule hereunder.

This is what we need:

2 wooden boards 39.4 x 50 cm
1 wooden board 36 x 50 cm
3 wooden boards 36 x 38 cm
4 mirrors in the right size (we used 40 x 50 cm, or order them online in the size you want or go to your local glass store)
4 wheels
Glue for mirrors
Use the right equipment for cutting the wood. You can also ask a hardware store to do it for you.

Rekenschema/Calculation example in case you use mirrors of 40 cm (w) x 50 cm (h) x 0.3 cm (t). Replace our sizes for the ones you want to use (bold numbers) or order your mirrors in the right size in a shop after you build a cabinet. Take notice that the mirror on top is just a bit bigger than 40 x 40 cm!! Measure carefully.

– our mirrors are 0.3 cm thick each
– our wooden boards are 2 cm thick each
– our wheels are 3 cm high

Use this model so your mirrors will fit:

– board A + B = 40 cm (w) – 0.6 cm (2 x mirror thickness of 0.3 cm each) = 39.4 cm (w) x 50 cm (h)

– board C = 40 cm (w) – 4 cm (2 x board thickness of 2 cm each) = 36 cm (w) x 50 cm (h)

– board D + E + F = 40 cm (w) – 4 cm (2 x board thickness of 2 cm each) = 36 cm (w) + 40 cm (w) – 2 cm (1 x board thickness of 2 cm each) = 38 cm (depth) so a board from 36 (w) x 38 cm (depth)

– Attach board F = Size wheels 3 cm (h) – 1 cm (to make your wheels dissapear) = 2 cm from the bottom

Begin met de buitenkant. Schroef A en B op C (eerst even voorboren, dat had ik van te voren al gedaan). Schroef nu D, E en F tussen A en B (zie het filmpje HIER voor de live instructie). Zorg ervoor dat je F een aantal centimeters van de onderkant bevestigd. Het is namelijk de bedoeling dat de wieltje nauwelijks zichtbaar zijn. Onze wieltjes zijn 4 cm dus ik heb plank F 3 cm van de onderkant vastgemaakt.

Start with the frame. Scruw A and B on C (use a boar before scruwing). Scruw D, E and F between A and B (watch the video HERE for live instructions). Take care you attached board F a few cm from the bottom. I don’t want anyone to see the wheels. Our wheels are 4 cm so I attached board F 3 cm from the bottom.

De basis is al bijna klaar. Schroef de wieltjes in de hoeken maar wel zo dat ze kunnen ronddraaien. Kijk meteen even of je plank F niet te ver omhoog hebt geplaatst. De wieltjes mogen minimaal 1 cm uitsteken.

You already finished the base. Screw the wheels in the corners but be sure they can move all round. Check if you didn’t put board F too high. The wheels are supposed to stick out for 1 cm minimum.

Soms is je rekensommetje goed maar wijkt de spiegel af van wat er op de verpakking staat. Met zilver tape op de randen zorg je ervoor dat niemand deze kleine afwijkingen ziet. Het lijkt of de spiegel volledig doorloopt.

Sometimes your calculation is right but the mirror is just a few milimeters too small. To avoid the sight of wood on the outside, you can attach soms silver tape on all edges. Nowone will see your mirror is a bit too small.

Je kan al met het lijmen van de spiegels beginnen. Ik heb eerst A, B en C gemonteerd en ze met schilderstape aan elkaar gemaakt om er zeker van te zijn dat ze op hun plek blijven. Wees niet gierig met de lijm. Plaats je vlakke handen op de spiegels en druk ze aan. Het is verstandig om 12 uur te wachten tot je de bovenste spiegel vastmaakt.

Time to glue the first mirror! I started on A, B and C and attached the mirrors with soft tape to be sure they will keep on their place while drying. Be generous with the glue and carefully presh you flat hands on the mirrors. It’s a good idea to wait 12 hours before you finish the cabinet with the mirror on top.

Ik ben de volgende dag pas verder gegaan. Maar wat zag het er al gaaf uit! | I’ve waited till the next day but the cabinet was already looking stunning!

Je kan nu beginnen aan de laatste spiegel. Wij kochten 4 spiegels van 40 x 50 cm. De bovenste spiegel kan door minimale afwijkingen in de zaagsnedes niet precies 40 x 40 zijn. Daarom heb ik ervoor gekozen om de spiegel af te tekenen en hem zelf op maat te snijden. Eerst teken je de onderkant af, zet streepjes op de zijkanten en plak de bovenkant af met schilderstape zodat je een rechte lijn krijgt. De eerste spiegel die we op maat sneden brak. We hadden zoiets nog nooit zelf gedaan. Na wat oefenen op de gebroken spiegel ging het goed. Gebruik een speciaal glasmesje en snijd m.b.v. een houten lat 1 rechte lijn. Tik vervolgens tegen de onderkant van het glas tot het breekt. Bekijk eerst de video als je het zelf wilt doen en ook geen ervaring hebt. Natuurlijk kan je ook de maten opnemen en de spiegel op maat bestellen. Wel zo makkelijk.

We’re gonna montage the upper mirror. We bought 4 mirrors in the size 40 x 50 cm so we have to cut the upper mirror in the right size. Sometimes this upper mirror can be different than 40 x 40 cm. Use a special knife to cut the mirror. Use a wooden bean and make 1 straigh movement. Than hit the glass carefully from under till it brakes on the line. See my video. Or you measure the right size and order a custom cut mirror. I think that’s the easiest way. The first mirror we tried this on broke. After some practicing on the broken mirror we succeeded.

Geduld is een schone zaak. Na 12 uur wachten kan je je kastje in gebruik nemen. Ik hoop dat mijn instructies duidelijk waren en dat je zelf een kastje hebt kunnen maken. Ik ben erg benieuwd naar het resultaat!
